July 2, 1997 Maryland Picked Fourth in ACC Coaches Pre-Season Volleyball PollGreensboro, N.C. -- The University of Maryland volleyball team, the 1996 Atlantic Coast Conference champions, are predicted to finish fourth in this year's ACC race as determined by the league's nine head coaches. Duke has been picked as the favorite, as it received four first-place votes. Duke returns five starters, including ACC Rookie of the Year Sarah Peifer, from a team that finished third a year ago. The Terps return eight letterwinners from last year's squad, including three starters. Seniors Elizabeth Efron and Eden Kroeger highlight the list of returning starters, as both were named First Team All-ACC, and District 3 All-Americans a year ago. Maryland begins its 1997 season August 29-30 at the Oregon State Tournament in Corvallis, Ore.
