Maryland Swimmers and Divers Continue Winning Ways

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland swimming and diving teams continued their winning ways during the 1996-97 season. The men's team finished with a dual meet record of 7-3 to post its second consecutive winning season. The women, meanwhile, finished with a record of 9-2 to post their third consecutive winning season.

Junior Scott Grayson was Maryland's top men's swimmer this year. He scored 217.5 points and at the 1997 ACC Championships, finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.08). Following the season, Grayson was named All-ACC.

In addition, Grayson advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row. At that meet, he placed 18th in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.33 seconds).

Junior Dawn Josephson and freshman Sarah Solomon were the top two swimmers on the women's team. Josephson scored 251.75 points during the season and had the third fastest ACC time in the 100-yard backstroke (57.08 seconds). Solomon scored 237.25 points and broke the school record in the 100-yard freestyle (51.43 seconds).

The women's team was just as successful in the classroom during the past year. They finished up the season with the highest GPA of any women's team at Maryland with an overall GPA of 3.1.

Heading into the 1997-98 season, both teams will return their top six point scorers.
