Seven Terps Named To Mid-Atlantic Region Field Hockey Team

College Park, Md.--The 1997 Mid-Atlantic Region All-American field hockey teams have been announced and seven Maryland players have been selected. Senior forward Nadine Bennett (Chegutu, Zimbabwe), senior midfielder Christine DeBow (West Chester, Pa.), senior forward Lynsey McVicker (Balleymoney, Northern Ireland), junior midfielder Jen Pratt (Greene, N.Y.) and freshman forward Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) were named to the first team. Senior back Carolyn Schwarz (Gaithersburg, Md.) and freshman midfielder Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) were named to the second team.

Bennett led Maryland with 24 goals this season and had a school-record 11 game scoring streak. DeBow scored nine goals and tallied seven assists. McVicker led the Terps in total points with 59 (18 goals, 23 assists). Pratt led the nation in assists, with 33. Tagliente scored 19 goals and was named the ACC Rookie of the Year.

Schwarz led the Terrapin defense, which recorded nine shutouts this season. Smith, meanwhile, scored seven goals and had three assists.

The voting for the Mid-Atlantic Region All-American teams was done by the coaches of the 15 teams in the region.

Maryland concluded their season with a record of 18-4.
