Terps Post Perfect 5-0 Record In Pirate Invite With 12-2 Win

GREENVILLE, NC – Maryland softball finished out their perfect weekend on Sunday with a 12-2 win over host school East Carolina. Across their five games at the Pirate Invitational, Maryland outsourced opponents 38-2. The Terps move to 15-4 on the season, carrying a six-game win streak into their final road tournament.

Mackense Greico launched two homers in the game (her second two-homer game as a Terp), as she tied her career-high with five RBIs and set a career-high with four runs scored. Trinity Schlotterbeck also hit a homer, finishing with three RBIs and a run. The hot-hitting Terps now have 12 home runs on the season.

Amelia Lech went 3-for-3 with three runs scored as she set new career-highs in hits and runs scored.

Courtney Wyche recorded another strong start in the circle, throwing for six innings and seven strikeouts. Keira Bucher came in for relief in the seventh to secure the win. Dating back to last weekend, the Terps' pitching staff recorded 35 consecutive scoreless innings before allowing two runs to ECU in the fourth inning.

Breaking Down The Action
  • An RBI single by Lech to drive in Megan Mikami put the Terps on the board first. Mikami was ready to run after leading-off with a walk and stealing second. With Lech and Greico on base, Schlotterbeck smashed a three-run shot to left center field, putting Maryland up 4-0 in the first inning.
  • Wyche made an entertaining grab for the first out in the second stanza. Instinctively shielding her facemask from a fast-approaching liner, the pitcher chuckled in disbelief when she saw her softball-filled glove.
  • The Terps added two more runs in the third as Greico crushed a two-run homer that drove in Lech.
  • East Carolina scored two runs in the fourth off of a RBI double, putting the score at 6-2.
  • Maryland responded in the sixth, as Greico capitalized on an ECU fielding error to score with the bases loaded. Another ECU error allowed Michaela Jones to then touch home. The Terps rounded out their three-run inning with a double steal attempt that resulted in a Taylor Liguori run.
  • Greico made a brilliant double-play in the bottom of the sixth, catching an ECU line drive and tagging first base in one swoop to retire both the batter and the runner on first.
Numbers To Know
  • 4: Lech reached base during each of her four appearances at the plate.
  • 11: With her stolen base today, Mikami swiped her 11th bag of the season. It was the 38th stolen base for the team.
  • 35: The Terps' pitching staff threw 35 consecutive scoreless innings over the tournament before allowing two runs in the fourth inning.
  • 38: The Terps scored 38 runs in the five games at the Pirate Invitational.
  • 57: Wyche's seven Ks in this game bring the strikeout queen's season total to 57.
