No. 23 Terps Hit Two Homers In 6-4 Win Over Virginia

CHAPEL HILL, NC Trinity Schlotterbeck and Sydney Lewis both hit the first home runs of their season and Schlotterbeck drove in three runs as the Terps moved to 6-1 on the season with a 6-4 win over Virginia in the ACC/Big Challenge at North Carolina. 

Schlotterbeck went 2-for-3 as she had a big day at the plate. Jaeda McFarland also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Mackenzie Greico drove in a pair of runs with a clutch two-run single to give the Terps the lead their would never relinquish. 

In the circle, Courtney Wyche threw 4.2 innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out four for the victory. Keira Bucher picked up her fourth save of the season, finishing the game with 2.1 innings of relief. 

Kiley Goff, Taylor Liguori and Michaela Jones had the Terps' other hits. 

Maryland continues its best start to a season since 2012, when they started 9-1. Virginia is now 5-3.


Breaking Down The Action
  • Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as the Cavaliers scored on an error.
  • Greico's two-run single in the third inning put the Terps ahead 2-1 with Jaeda McFarland and Kiley Goff scoring. 
  • Schlotterbeck smacked a solo home run in the fourth inning, putting Maryland up 3-1. 
  • Virginia countered with a homer by Sarah Coon in the fifth to cut the Maryland lead to 3-2.
  • Lewis hit her first career homer, a shot to rightfield, putting the Terps ahead 4-2 in the fifth. Then Schlotterbeck's single up the middle scored McFarland for a 6-2 lead.   
  • Virginia responded with two runs in the sixth on a two-run triple, cutting it to 6-4.
