Seven-Run Third Propels Terps To 2-0 Start With 10-2 Win Over BYU

PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO – Maryland racked up seven runs in the third inning for its second impressive win at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, beating BYU, 10-2. At 2-0, the Terps have won their first two games of a season for the first time since the 2013 season. 

Jaeda McFarland went 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, equalling her career-high for hits in a game. Sammi Woods also went 3-for-3 with a two-run single and a double – Maryland's only extra-base hit of the game. Mackense Grieco drove in a pair of runs as well and scored twice with a hit. Amerlia Lech also had two hits for the Terps. 

Megan Mikami, Taylor Liguori, Michaela Jones and Sydney Lewis all drove in runs. 

In the circle, Trinity Scholotterbeck tossed 4.1 inning, striking out four and allowing just three hits, she departed the game without allowing a run. Freshman Keira Bucher came on finish the game, recording the final two outs for the Terps. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • After two scorless innings, Maryland piled up seven runs in the bottom of the third inning. Mikami singles in Woods for the first run of the game. Then McFarland's single brought home Mikami. Greico's two-run single scored McFarland and Kiley Goff for a 4-0 Terps' lead. The lead expanded as Sydney Lewis' sac fly brought home Greico. Woods' two-run single plated Jones and Scholotterbeck for a 7-0 lead. 
  • The Terps added two more runs in the fourth inning as Liguori singled in Madison Runyan. Then Jones' single brought home Greico for a 9-0 edge. 
  • BYU got two runs back in the fifth inning to prolong the game as the Terps had a chance to run-rule the Cougars, leading 9-0 with two outs in the fifth. 
  • Maryland ended the game scoring a run in the fifth inning as Woods scored on a throwing error for the 10-2 final.

  • The last time the Terps started a season 2-0 was in 2013 when Maryland beat Long Island, 5-3 and UMass, 16-8. 
  • The last time Maryland started 3-0 was in 2008 with wins over Michigan, UMass and North Florida. 

Numbers To Know
  • 4: Maryland stole four bases in the win with Mikami, Scholotterbeck and Woods (two) each swiping bags. 
  • 3: McFarland had three hits in the game, equalling her season high from a season ago as she had three hits at Michigan State on April 30. Se had four three-hit games as a freshman in 2021 and now has six three-hit games in her career, a career-high. 
  • 12: The Terps had 12 singles in the game.
