No. 21 Maryland Falls At Illinois In Series Opener

CHAMPAIGN, IL -- No. 21 Maryland suffered a 19-1 loss to Illinois, the first-place team in the Big Ten, on Friday night at Memorial Stadium. The defeat dropped the Terps to 30-8 overall and 7-3 in the conference. Illinois is now 20-15 overall and 11-2 in the Big Ten. 

Matt Shaw and Luke Shliger had the Terps' two hits. 


Breaking Down The Action
  • Illinois jumped out to a 4-0 lead keyed by a three-run home run by Kellen Sarver in the bottom of the third inning. 
  • Maryland got on the board as Troy Schreffler Jr.'s foul sacrifice fly scored Nick Lorusso to make it 4-1. 
  • The Fighting Illini added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase their lead to 6-1. 
  • Illinois added 10 more in the later innings to break the game open.

  • 12: Chris Alleyne stole his team-high 12th base in the game and now has 46 in his career at Maryland.
