FAIRFAX, VA – The No. 23 Maryland baseball team won a pitcher's duel against the George Mason Patriots, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Spuhler Field. The Terps (20-5) used great pitching, strong defense and timely hitting to complete their final game before conference play begins on Friday night against Penn State in College Park.
The 20-5 record through 25 games is the best in school history.
Logan Ott started on the mound for Maryland and pitched the best game of his young career, going five scoreless innings giving up just three hits. Nick Robinson relieved Ott and went two innings while giving up just one hit, keeping the Patriots (8-15) off the scoreboard.
Sean Heine got the final four outs for Maryland, shutting the door on George Mason's comeback attempt as the Patriots had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. Heine induced Carsen Pracht to groundout to close the game and earn his second save of the season.
Matt Shaw and Bobby Zmarzlak each had two hits. Nick Lorusso, Troy Schreffler Jr., and Zmarzlak drove in the Terps' runs.
Shaw and Luke Shliger used heads-up defensive plays to run down Patriots runners on the basepaths and ended multiple scoring chances. Shaw threw a runner out at third and Shliger caught a runner stealing unassisted.
