#6/5 Maryland 153, Mary Baldwin 27
Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
"We like to spread these games around and give these other kids from other teams the opportunity to play here at Maryland with our first class arena in front of our first class fans. I think that these exhibitions give our kids the experience of a game day more so than a closed scrimmage. Just putting on the jerseys and playing in front of our fans, that experience is really, really valuable for us. When you look at our team, with six freshmen, being able to get a lot of minutes on the floor for them and for them to gain that type of experience is important. We were able to change up our defenses and our offenses and work through some more of our sets a little bit more today. We obviously have a lot of scoring power on this roster, so you can see that in terms of our different rotations."
On being able to run through sets, and only having seven turnovers:
"I thought we did a really nice job of taking care of the basketball. I mean obviously, the game is going to continue to increase and the competition obviously, when we go to Division I opponents. I thought we had good discipline with what we were doing. I thought we missed too many layups today, especially early; I thought we cleaned that up the second half. But I liked our energy, I thought we were really unselfish as a team and really worked well together."
Redshirt Junior Guard Ieshia Small
On the press giving team extra adrenaline:
"I think that the press helps us a lot, mainly because it gets us going. I think transition is one of the strongest parts of this team. Once you score, you're right back in their face so it just keeps us going and everything."
Freshman Center Jenna Staiti
On Brionna Jones helping her to adjust:
"She's definitely helped me on and off the court. She's my roommate too, so off the court she's like a role model. On the court, everyday in practices, she tells me what to do and it's awesome to get to go against the No. 1 post player in the country. She's helped a lot."
Freshman Guard Destiny Slocum
On using these exhibition games to prepare for stiffer competition during the season:
"I would say in general, there is stuff that we still have to work on. So people may say 'Oh this is easy competition,' we as a team have stuff we need to work on each and every day. We kind of have to look at it as we did stuff right, but what did we also do that we can work on."
