No. 8/8 Maryland 80, RV/24 Northwestern 62

Head Coach Brenda Frese

Opening Statement:

"I thought we really set the tone from the tip. I thought we were ready to play. We jumped out early to make a statement, especially after their huge win against Ohio State. I thought Brene Moseley and Kristen Confroy were sensational today. Brene being the floor general, getting people involved. Credit the team, I thought they did an amazing job finding KC and being able to get her those kicks. It was so much fun to be able to watch Kristen shoot the ball with that much confidence. We all know the amount of hours these kids put in behind the scenes and KC has really worked hard in terms of getting in the gym and putting shots up. Big difference for us, it really opened up the offense, go them out of the zone. Northwestern's a great team. They're very scrappy and pesky. Just a great win for us."

On the 6-0 run to end the first half:

"For whatever reason this team likes making it close. I'd like to improve in that area. We were able to expand the lead. We're really dangerous when we're able to do that. Northwestern just kept coming at us. They were really aggressive in the second half."

On the turnovers:

"We talked about it during halftime. I thought we let them back in the game because of our turnovers. Credit to them, they did a lot. Wing denial, they attacked the ball, they were really aggressive off of the ball. Some really uncharacteristic turnovers by us, it's something that we could clean up."

On the dominance on the boards:

"I thought we were really, really active. That's an area where we continue to challenge ourselves and we take great pride in. Iowa out rebounded us when we were there. For us, it's an identity that we have a chip on our shoulder that we won't be out rebounded. I thought we were very active."

On the concern over Brionna Jones getting in foul trouble:

"It's something that we're trying to address as a staff. She did a better job not being in early foul trouble this game in the first half, it kind of came about in the second half. It's something that we continue to show her with film. She's so competitive and wants to make so many plays so just trying to find that balance with her. We need her on the floor."

On the effectiveness of the zone defense:

"Credit the staff. Just a tremendous game plan. We talked and looked at the synergy numbers and saw how they were playing zone against man. That's something we saw in terms of scout specific. It's pretty exciting when your team executes it. This was probably our best defensive day in terms of still finding Maggie Lyon and their shooters and over communicating . I thought we did a really solid job defensively."

Sophomore Guard Kristen Confroy

On preparation for stellar performance today:

“Every game I come in with the same mentality and today was just a good day. I thought my teammates did an awesome job finding me and I owe it all to them because obviously you can’t shoot threes without assists. I owe it all to them and I am very happy and excited for our future.

On her 10 rebounds:

“I think that its all about being relentless. Every shot that went I was looking to crash the boards and I think that as a guard there is a little bit of luck involved on if the ball come towards you. I was just trying to constantly crash the boards and make effort plays.”

Senior Guard Brene Moseley

On her consistent success against Northwestern:

“It’s all just a feel. Whatever they give I will just go from there. The opponent may change, but I’m not going to chance so whatever they give me I am going to play off of that.”

Northwestern Head Coach Joe McKeown

Opening Statement:

“Just disappointed that we didn’t play well today, and we don’t have a great reason because we played great Thursday night and beat Ohio State and I thought that momentum would carry over into tonight. Maryland played really well. They executed and we couldn’t get going until we made a little run in the second quarter but they came right back at us. We struggled shooting the ball and were a little tired. We’re a better team than what we showed today. Its just frustrating more than anything else.”

On Confroys’s three pointers:

“I think there was two things that happened. We left her open, not on purpose so that’s something we have to address. She hit some tough shots when we did guard her. It opened up offensive rebound lanes for them and being able to put the ball inside. We had a hard time guarding Brionna Jones also and those two just hurt us.”

On effective turnovers:

“I actually thought that if we got it down to single digits in the fourth quarter that we could hit transitions to make them turnover a bit. We never really got to that point. We have to turn people over and when we do we have to score. We had a lot of shots in transition that we normally make but we struggled with them tonight. “

On Brene Moseley:

“Send me part of her scholarship or stipend or something. I watched her grow up playing and I thought she was a terrific player when she was young. She just seems to like playing against Northwestern.”
