Maryland-Towson Postgame Quotes

Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening statement:
“I am really happy and thrilled for Laurin [Mincy]. Obviously through the adversity of her career and being able to battle the way she has, I was really excited for her to have her 1000th point in front of home fans. We had a slow start and I thought Towson came out ready to play. I thought once we were able to get in a groove and settle down our transition game got going. There are definitely some things we will need to improve on, but there were a lot of positive things to see in terms of the play of the team.”

On the noticeable difference in play after the first timeout:
“I wish I could take credit for that, but I think that was more of them getting in the groove and understanding that we needed to get things going since we were down three points.”

On the transition offense:
“It is exciting because it is something we spent the last two days focusing on. I thought some of our outlets by our bigs were really good and it is something that we really want to continue to build on.”

On getting a win after two losses:
“I do not know if it was a sigh of relief because I do not think any player or coach lines up and thinks about the last two games they have played. We just cared about winning this game and I think for us it was more of a mindset that this is how we wanted to play.”

On the defensive effort:
“I think first of all, we do some drills in practice that help us get that defensive mentality. I also think when you can force a shot clock violation on another team, it is great energy and it's a great transition to the next time down the floor in terms of what we want to get done.”

On the importance of the bench:
“I think watching players in terms of being able to do what we are asking them to do is great and we were able to use our bench depth. There are different games where you can have foul trouble, so we really need to make sure we can extend to our bench.”

Junior Forward Tierney Pfirman
On making the most of her minutes:
"Just like Coach B says, when your number is called, be ready to play and how you practice is how you play so I go out, I just enjoy it, and I do what I have to do to allow this team to be successful."

On how she guarded Towson forward LaTorri Hines-Allen:
"We tried to play her tendencies, if she beat us she beat us. Just play good defense and go from there."

Sophomore Center Brionna Jones
On missed first opportunities and getting a second opportunity:
"I think I just have to focus in and make sure I finish the the right way the first time but I was just trying to make sure that I got the ball again so I could have another attempt. I just need to focus in."

On her strong first-half performance:
"I think I just tried to be active and my teammates found me when I was open. Overall, we just worked together and I just happened to be open."

Sophomore Guard Lexie Brown
On the transition offense:
"You get up the court faster when you pass it off the dribble. Once we all figured that out we just kept running on our transition game and got easy layups."

On learning from the bench:
"When you sit on the bench you get to watch what everybody's doing, what everybody's strengths are, what everybody struggles at and really what the team struggles at as a whole. So being able to watch them all I thought today they did great, we didn't see many weaknesses on our team today."

Sophomore Guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough
On her second-half performance:
"My teammates gave me offense and we just played. Ball movement, getting to the foul line and good shooting helped us out."

Towson Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler
Opening Statement:
"That was a tough game for us today. Maryland's interior play obviously gave us problems from beginning to end. Our young women kept fighting though and I'm happy with their effort."

On what gave Maryland the advantage:
"Offensive boards and their transition game; they were able to get some easy baskets. I didn't think we did a good job of stopping the ball and not allowing them to have those easy baskets. So I'm going to say their transition game and their second chance opportunities."

On coaching during timeouts:
"We were talking about transition defense and angles on our close outs, making sure they didn't get anything easy, and just being physical around he basket."

Towson Redshirt Junior Forward LaTorri Hines-Allen
On playing with confidence against Maryland:
"I think just playing a Big Ten school, gave me the motivation to show everyone that I did belong to be at an ACC school. It gave me an extra push."

On ending runs:
"Of course it's a downer for a second when they are on a run, but we can't dwell on that, we have to look forward and finish the game out. Basketball is a game of runs and we can go on a run just as well as they can."
