GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior midfielder Dana Dobbie was named the 2008 ACC Player of the Year, announced May 9 by the Atlantic Coast Conference. She becomes the third player in league history to earn the honor twice, joining Jen Adams and Katie Chrest. Dobbie is the only player from Canada to earn the award.
Adams, currently serving as associate head coach with the Terps, won Player of the Year honors in consecutive seasons in 2000 and 2001 during her playing days at Maryland. Chrest, who works as a volunteer assistant with the Terps, was named conference Player of the Year twice in 2005 and 2006 while playing at Duke.
Dobbie, a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy along with classmate Kelly Kasper, leads the country this season in draw controls with 114 which set a new NCAA single-season record. She averages 6.00 per outing, which is tops in the nation. The Guelph, Ontario product leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in goals (66), goals per game (3.47), and draw controls. She is also second in points per game (4.11) behind Kasper. Her goals and goals per game numbers rank fourth and 13th in the country, respectively.
Dobbie now has 322 draw controls in her four years which is also an NCAA record. Her 66 goals this season is the sixth-highest single season total at Maryland. She also leads the team with 30 caused turnovers and is second with 30 ground balls. She has 14 hat tricks to her name this year in 19 games and has had 12 games with five or more draw controls.
Dobbie was a three-time ACC Player of the Week which led the conference and was named to the All-ACC team for the second straight season.
Dobbie and the rest of the Terps will host Temple on Sunday, May 11 at 1:00 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
