Campbell Leads Terps to Fifth at UVa
Oct. 16, 2009 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Junior Ashley Campbell led University of Maryland runners to the finish line with a 21st-place finish individually and helping the Terrapins to fifth in the women's team standings Friday at the Panorama Farms Invitational cross country meet hosted by the University of Virginia. Many of Maryland's top runners skipped the event while continuing training for the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, to be held Oct. 31 in Cary, N.C. Campbell ran the 6-kilometer event in 22:05.87, marking the first time this season she was the first Terrapin to the line. The Terrapins finished with 126 points in the team standings, just nine points behind third-place Texas A&M. Villanova, the second-ranked team in the nation, scored a near-perfect total of 17 points to easily win the women's team event. No. 10 Virginia was second with 52, with Tennessee in third at 69. Villanova's Sheila Reid broke the 6K course record by taking the individual title in 20:13.43. She won by two seconds over teammate Nicole Shappert. Also for Maryland, Christina Nelson was 26th in 22:14.38, Angeli Sivaraman was 28th in 22:18.49, Halsey Sinclair placed 31st in 22:28.59 and freshman Julie Fricke was the Terps' final scorer in 32nd at 22:29.23. On the men's side, the Terrapins finished in 10th place with 302 points. The field included four teams ranked in the top 30 in the nation. Virginia, ranked 15th, won the men's team event with 30 points, besting 11th-ranked Syracuse (41), 24th-ranked Villanova (70) and 26th-ranked Duke (109). Freshman Greg Jubb was the first Terrapin to the line on Friday, completing the 8-kilometer course in 25:30.48. Kyle Gaffney (76th, 25:43.79), Ben Diestel (81st, 25:49.58), Kevin Gahr (84th, 25:53.19) and Mike Cator (86th, 26:01.97) also were among the top five scorers for the Terrapins.
Emil Heineking of Virginia cut 36 seconds off the old course record to earn the individual title. He won by 20 seconds over Villanova's Mat Mildenhall. The Terrapins are off until the ACC Championships in two weeks.
