Women's Water Polo Downed by No. 19 Cal State Bakersfield

Feb. 11, 2007

LA JOLLA, Calif.- The University of Maryland women's water polo team fell to the No. 19 Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners 10-6 this morning at the University of California at San Diego's Triton Invitational.

Despite a 3-2 first quarter lead, the young Terrapin team's lack of maturity allowed the nationally-ranked Roadrunners to regain a 5-4 lead going into halftime.

"We had opportunities both offensively and defensively," said Maryland head coach Carl Salyer, "but we let our fundamentals go by the wayside."

Sophomore Elizabeth Hopkins scored two for the Terps, and sophomores Blaise Stanicic, Christen Vagts, Bryndis Klein, and Laurel Laidlaw added the remaining four goals.

Senior goalie Marissa Corwin blocked nine for the Terps during the first half while allowing five goals scored. Sophomore Ashleigh Jobson took over in goal for the second half, adding five blocks of her own.

The Terps will get the opportunity to redeem the loss today at 1:00 p.m. PT when they face the loser of the Bucknell-UC Northridge match-up.
