Tar Heels Topple Terps

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In the first game of a two-game road trip on Tobacco Road, the Terps lost to North Carolina 3-0 Thursday evening. Maryland (9-15, 3-9 ACC) will look to snap an eight-match losing streak Friday night at NC State.
The two teams traded the first eight points of the opening set before North Carolina scored three points in a row to seize a 7-4 lead. The Tar Heels stretched their lead to six points at 12-6 before the Terps scored the next two. Junior Remy McBain answered a North Carolina point with a kill of her own to make the score 13-9. Following the McBain kill, the Tar Heels scored the next seven points to take control of the set and went on to win 25-13.
North Carolina scored eight of the first 11 points at the beginning of the second set and stretched its lead to 17-8 before the Terps made a run. Back-to-back blocks by junior Caitlin Adams and McBain sparked a five-point Maryland run. The Tar Heels would extend its lead to 18-13 before two consecutive errors by North Carolina brought the Terps within three points. However, the Terrapins did not pull any closer as the Tar Heels took the set 25-20.
The Tar Heels claimed a 16-7 lead with a six-point run midway through the third set. North Carolina led by as much as 10 points at 21-11 before kills by Crutcher and Adams sparked a Terrapin run. The Terps scored 10 of the next 13 points to cut the Tar Heel lead to three, but North Carolina withstood the attack and was able to close out the set 25-21 and win the match.
