Oct. 6, 2007
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Maryland freshman Brittney Grove (Glen Allen, Va.) posted four kills and eight blocks in her home state of Virginia and seniors Jade Brown (Atlanta, Ga.) and Beth Gillming (Cincinnati, Ohio) both reached double digits in kills at Virginia Saturday evening in a 3-0 loss to the Cavaliers.
Virginia (10-6, 5-2) took the first game thanks to a 9-2 run in the middle stages, turning an 11-10 lead into a more comfortable eight-point margin at 20-12.
Neither team lead by more than three in a tight second game. The Terps (10-6, 2-5) led 26-23 late in the frame, but the Cavaliers battled back to tie things up at 29 apiece. The Terps held match point at 30-29, but the Cavs' Sarah Kirkwood recorded back-to-back kills to give Virginia match point, where a Kelly Irvin service ace finished the game.
The Cavs started quickly in the third game and led by as many as 11 points in the win.
Brown led the Terps with 11 kills while Gillming recorded 10. Gillming also added three blocks.
Junior Maggie Schmelzle (Cincinnati, Ohio) paced Maryland with 11 digs, followed closely by freshman libero Bethany Springer (Frederick, Md.), who had 10. Sophomore Hayley Hanson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led Maryland with 16 assists. Freshman Rachel Profit (Washington, D.C.) had 15 assists.
Kirkwood led the Cavs with 25 kills on .575 hitting.
The Terps return to the court next weekend as they welcome the Florida State Seminoles Friday and Miami Hurricanes Saturday night at Comcast Center Pavilion. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
