COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Kara Bates recorded a team-best 13 kills to lead the University of Maryland volleyball team to a 3-0 victory against the Howard Bison Saturday afternoon in the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Terrapin Invitational.

The Terrapins (7-5) were never threatened in the match, winning by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-15.

Senior middle blocker Katie Usher gave Maryland a productive all-around match, posting nine kills on .667 hitting with four service aces and two blocks.

Howard (1-14) out-hit Maryland .308-.294 in the first set and the session featured 10 ties and six lead changes before the Terps went on a late run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Maryland's defense took over in the final two sets, holding the Bison to .029 and -.036 in the final two stanzas.

Sophomore Maddi Lee added eight kills on .375 hitting with four blocks for Maryland. Gazelle D'Artois led the Bison with a match-high 14 kills.

The Terps are back on the court at 7 p.m. Saturday to face the UMBC Retrievers in the final match of the tournament.
