Terps Travel to North Carolina for ACC Opener

No. 20 Maryland meets North Carolina and N.C. State this weekend

TERPS OPEN ACC PLAY: Maryland, ranked No. 20 in this week's AVCA Coaches poll, open the 1997 ACC season when it travels to North Carolina this weekend for a Saturday match against the Tar Heels and a Sunday match against N.C. State.

WEEKEND RECAP: Maryland captured the 1997 Ramada New Carrollton Invitational this past weekend, defeating Kansas State (3-1), South Carolina (3-1) and George Mason (3-0). Senior setter Eden Kroeger was named MVP of the Invitational and Elizabeth Efron and Katie Jentes were named to the all-tournament team.

CAN YOU DIG IT: Led by senior setter Eden Kroeger, the Terrapins are ranked No. 3 in the country in digs, and rank first in the Atlantic Coast Conference. As a team, the Terps average 19.64 digs per game. Kroeger heads the ACC individual digs leaderboard with a 3.93 per game average.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: North Carolina: The Tar Heels own a 6-5 overall record, and are 5th in the ACC standings...play Florida State on Friday before meeting Maryland...leading hitter is Tori Seibert (.320). N.C. State: The Wolfpack are 5-9 overall, 8th in the ACC standings...have won five straight matches...leading hitter is Nicole Peterson (.301).

COUNTDOWN: Senior setter Eden Kroeger (Englewood, Colo.) is 61 assists shy of breaking the Maryland all-time assist record. She currently has recorded 4,212 assists during her career.

A LOOK AT THE LINEUP:

Kim Adolphs, Jr., OH, Runcorn, Australia: Hitting .204...hit a career-high .400 against Kent at the Gazette Times Classic...followed that performance when she hit .382 against Oregon State...totaled 17 kills against Kent which is also a career-best...is second on the team in digs with 103...totaled 17 digs against then-14th-ranked Ohio State which is a season-high...her 3.68 digs per game ranks her second in the ACC behind teammate Eden Kroeger...has totaled seven service aces.

Elizabeth Efron, Sr., RS, Buenos Aires, Argentina: Is hitting a team-high .305 which ranks her 10th in the ACC...hit .615 versus Oregon State at the Gazette Times Classic at Oregon State...hit .333 against 14th-ranked Ohio State, totaling 20 kills on 48 swings...named to the all-tournament team at the Gazette Times Classic...also had 11 digs versus the Buckeyes...has tossed up 34 assists...leads the team in service aces with 12 (5th in the ACC with a .43 per game average)...is averaging 4.11 kills per game (3rd in the ACC), 2.9 digs per game, and .7 blocks per game...her 2.9 digs ranks her sixth in the ACC...named to the all-tournament team at Maryland's Ramada New Carrollton Invitational...recorded a career-high 21 digs against South Carolina at the Ramada Invitational.

Katie Jentes, Fr., OH, Madbury, N.H.: Has played in seven matches...earned the starting nod at last weekend's Ramada New Carrollton Invitational hosted by Maryland...named to the all-tournament team at the Ramada Invitational...hit a career-best .423 against George Mason where she totaled a career-high 15 kills on 26 swings...served a career-high five aces against Kansas State and had 11 digs against South Carolina...nominated for ACC Rookie of the Week following her performance at the Ramada Invitational.

Conya Jabari-Kitwala, Sr., MH, Las Vegas, Nev: One of three returning starters from last year...is hitting .252 which places her third on the team...has 10 service aces which is second on the team (her .36 per game ranks her seventh in the ACC), and 80 digs which ranks her third (2.86 per game ranks her eighth in the ACC)...hit a season-high .444 against Kansas State at the Ramada New Carrollton Invitational where she pounded down 11 kills on 18 swings...totaled 16 digs against 14th-ranked Ohio State...is averaging 2.1 kills per game.

Eden Kroeger, Sr., S, Englewood, Colo: Has totaled 338 assists in eight matches...named ACC Player of the Week on September 22 after leading the Terps to the title of the Ramada New Carrollton Invitational...is averaging 12.1 assists per game which ranks her second in the ACC...leads the Terps in digs with 110...registered 61 assists, 10 kills and 22 digs in the Terps' 3-2 win over 14th-ranked Ohio State at the Gazette Times Classic...named MVP of the Gazette Times Classic...is averaging 3.3 digs per game which leads the ACC...named MVP of Maryland's Ramada New Carrollton Invitational...hit .400 against Kansas State.
