No. 23 Volleyball Hosts Ramada New Carrollton Invitational
TERPS BACK IN ACTION: After a two-week break, the 23rd-ranked Maryland Terrapins return to action to host the 1997 Ramada New Carrollton Invitational at Cole Field House. Participating in this year's tournament is Big 12 powerhouse Kansas State, South Carolina of the SEC, and local rival George Mason.
SEASON RECAP: The Maryland Terrapins (5-0) opened the 1997 season in winning fashion as they captured the Gazette Times Classic championship at Oregon State University. The Terps downed Kent, Oregon State and Drake all in three games, and then collected a 3-2 win over then-14th-ranked Ohio State to claim the championship. Senior All-America candidate Elizabeth Efron was named to the all-tournament team. The Terps then hosted Georgetown on September 3, downing the Hoyas in three games.
CAN YOU DIG IT: Led by senior setter Eden Kroeger, the Terrapins remain are ranked No. 3 in the country in digs, and rank first in the Atlantic Coast Conference. As a team, the Terps average 20.85 digs per game. Kroeger heads the ACC individual digs leaderboard with a 4.71 per game average.
COUNTDOWN: Senior setter Eden Kroeger (Englewood, Colo.) is 193 assists shy of breaking the Maryland all-time assist record. She currently has recorded 4,080 assists during her career.
A Look At The Lineup
Kim Adolphs, Jr., OH, Runcorn, Australia: Hitting .217...hit a career-high .400 against Kent at the Gazette Times Classic...followed that performance when she hit .382 against Oregon State...totaled 17 kills against Kent which is also a career-best...is second on the team in digs with 66...her 3.88 digs per game ranks her second in the ACC behind teammate Eden Kroeger...has totaled three service aces...her 3.53 kills per game places her eighth in the ACC.
Elizabeth Efron, Sr., RS, Buenos Aires, Argentina: Is hitting a team-high .358 which ranks her fourth in the ACC...hit .615 versus Oregon State at the Gazette Times Classic at Oregon State...hit .333 against 14th-ranked Ohio State, totaling 20 kills on 48 swings...named to the all-tournament team at the Gazette Times Classic...also had 11 digs versus the Buckeyes...has tossed up 18 assists...leads the team in service aces with nine (2nd in the ACC with a .53 per game average)...is averaging 4.53 kills per game (t1st in the ACC), 2.3 digs per game, and .5 blocks per game.
Kate Hannas, So., OH, Ellicott City, Md: Earned first start of her young Terrapin career at the Gazzette Times Classic...has seen action in all but two games...is hitting .193 and has 35 digs...totaled six blocks which is fourth on the squad...registered double-digit kills (10) and digs (14) against Oregon State.
Conya Jabari-Kitwala, Sr., MH, Las Vegas, Nev: One of three returning starters from last year...is hitting .284 which places her second on the team...has eight service aces which is second on the team (her .47 per game ranks her fifth in the ACC), and 49 digs which ranks her third...hit a season-high .381 against 14th-ranked Ohio State where she knocked down 13 kills...also totaled 16 digs...is averaging 1.8 kills per game...her 2.89 digs per game ranks her 10th in the ACC.
Eden Kroeger, Sr., S, Englewood, Colo: Has totaled 206 assists in five games...is averaging 12.1 assists per game which ranks her second in the ACC...leads the Terps in digs with 80...registered 61 assists, 10 kills and 22 digs in the Terps' 3-2 win over 14th-ranked Ohio State at the Gazette Times Classic...named MVP of the Gazette Times Classic...is averaging 4.7 digs per game which leads the ACC.
