Stancu Named to All-ACC Team
April 19, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland sophomore Cristina Stancu has been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team, the league office announced Thursday. Stancu is the 20th Maryland women's tennis player all-time to be voted to the team by the league's 12 head coaches.
Stancu, a first-time honoree, is the second Terrapin to be voted to the 18-member team in as many seasons (Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar, 2011) and has played every dual match at the No. 1 position for the Terps this spring.
The native of Constanta, Romania, is currently ranked 26th nationally and leads the team in wins with 22. Stancu has a 9-6 record against ranked opponents including victories over No. 16 Anna Bartenstein of Miami and No. 21 Emily Fraser of Virginia.
Stancu has paired with junior Vroni Van Berlo in doubles this spring and the duo has gone 12-6 playing primarily on the No. 2 court.
Duke's Beatrice Capra was voted the ACC Women's Player of the Year and ACC Freshman of the Year. Click here to view the conference's full release.
The Terps (7-14, 1-10 ACC) play Georgia Tech in the opening round of the ACC Tournament. The match is set for 3 p.m. Thursday at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. In-match scoring is available at TheACC.com.
