Day One Complete at ITA East Regional

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Lisa Miller won Friday as the University of Maryland women's tennis team began play at the ITA East Regional Championships. Day one action featured the qualification rounds for each the singles and doubles draws.

Maryland had three players looking to qualify for day 2 in the singles draw. Miller rallied to win her opening match over Carissa Aboubakare of Brown University. After dropping the first set, 6-2, Miller followed by winning the final two sets 6-1, 6-2, to move on to the next round.

Miller then faced ACC opponent Martha Blakely of Virginia Tech who defeated Miller, 7-5, 6-2.

Also looking to qualify for the singles main draw were sophomore Oksana Krutiyenko and freshmen Jordan Hansbrough. Krutiyenko lost to Smaranda Stan of University of Buffalo, 6-3, 6-1, while Hansbrough was defeated by Boston College's Katharine Atwell, 6-1, 6-3.

Both Krutiyenko and Hansbrough were eliminated in their opening matches.

Maryland teams Karin Lundmark and Oksana Krutiyenko as well as Eleanor Peters and Jordan Hansbrough competed in the doubles qualifier.

Lundmark and Krutiyenko opened their play with a solid win, 8-3, over Yale duo Jessica Rhee and Sarah Lederhandler. They were defeated in the following match by Lauren McHale and Rachel Saiontz of Princeton. Peters and Hansbrough also lost their opening match to Katarina Gajic and Alina Sullivan of Boston College, 8-3.


 

 

The second day of action continues Saturday with Amir, Lundmark, Peters in singles play as well as Amir and Miller in doubles.
