Stancu Downed, Doubles Fall in Three at NCAAs

ATHENS, Ga. - Sophomore Cristina Stancu, ranked No. 28 nationally, dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to ninth-ranked Lauren Embree of Florida Thursday in the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Singles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
In doubles action, 33rd-ranked Ana Belzunce and Welma Luus lost a hard-fought three-set match to 23rd-ranked Jillian O'Neill and Alex Anghelescu of Georgia Tech in the opening round of the doubles championship.
After Stancu and Embree split the first four games, Embree won the next four to secure the first set. Embree carried the momentum into the second set to win the match.
Belzunce and Luus rebounded from a 6-3 opening set defeat to win the second set 6-2 to force a deciding third set. In a back-and-forth set, O'Neill and Anghelescu outlasted the Terp tandem for a 7-5 win.
Stancu completes the season with a 23-11 record. Belzunce and Luus finish up at 15-15.
