Terps Too Much For Demon Deacons

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 31 Cristina Stancu won her fourth consecutive match and third over a ranked opponent this season as the No. 73 Maryland women's tennis team cruised past Wake Forest, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at the Cole Field House Tennis Courts. The Terps (7-11, 1-7 ACC) won the doubles point for the 10th time this season and won 5 of 6 singles matches to secure the victory. Following a win by senior Jordan Hansbrough and freshman Mikele Irazusta at the No. 3 position, Stancu and doubles partner junior Vroni Van Berlo gave the Terps the lead with an 8-4 victory at No. 2. Stancu punctuated her afternoon with a straight-set victory over No. 63 Kayla Duncan at No. 1 singles to improve to 7-1 in ACC action and clinch the match for Maryland. Hansbrough increased Maryland's lead to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 rout of Catherine Roach at No. 6 singles. Shortly thereafter, Van Berlo dispatched of Rebecca Siegler in straight sets at the No. 3 position to set the stage for Stancu. At No. 4, sophomore Welma Luus rebounded from a second-set loss to win the match in the third set, 6-2, over Karen Forman for her second victory in a row. After falling 6-2 in the opening set to Brigita Bercyte, freshman Mikele Irazusta took the second set, 6-2, and battled for a 15-13 victory in the third set.
