Harvard Too Much for Terps
Feb. 3, 2013
CAMBRIDGE, Mass - Gabriela Srodowski won her third singles match of the season, but Harvard defeated the Maryland women's tennis team, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson (2-2, 0-0 Ivy League) took a 2-1 doubles decision to gain an early advantage on the Terrapins (2-1, 0-1 ACC), before pulling away with victories in five out of six singles matches.
Vroni Van Berlo and Olga Gaistruk started off the match well, defeating Kristen Norton and Amy He, 8-3, to lift the Terrapins even in doubles. However, Olga and Nataliya Bredikhina were unable to capitalize, losing a close 8-6 decision to Hideko Tachibana and Hannah Morrill, giving the doubles point to Harvard.
The Crimson never looked back, winning three tight three set matches to ultimately take the singles portion 5-1. Srodowski prevented a Harvard sweep, her 6-4, 6-4 victory the third singles win of her young career.
Maryland finishes its weekend trip to Boston 0-2, a swing that will serve as a learning experience for a fairly inexperienced group.
We're are young, we can only get better and there is a lot of season left to play," head coach Daria Panova said. "But as always, we never gave up and fought on every point with all our hearts."
The Terrapins are back on court February 15th against Towson. Play is scheduled to begin at 2 pm from the Tennis Center at College Park.
