Dec. 10, 1997 Maryland Women's Tennis Tied for Fifth in the EastSeveral Terps Also Ranked Individually in the RegionThe University of Maryland Women's Tennis Team is ranked in a tie for fifth in the 1998 Women's Division I East Region. The Terps are tied with Richmond, while Harvard and William & Mary are tied as the top teams in the region. Several Terps made the list individually. Lorraine Bittles (Sophomore - Nashville, TN) was ranked sixth in singles, Meg Griffin (Junior - Topeka, KS) captured a 10th place ranking, and Stacy Walkowitz (Sophomore - Coral Springs, FL) was ranked 25th. Two Terrapin Doubles teams were also ranked in the east. The team of Lorraine Bittles and Meg Griffin were ranked sixth, while the team of Chrissie Terril (Freshman - Plano, TX) and Stacy Walkowitz captured an eighth place ranking. The lone ranked player for the men's tennis team was Dale Cathell (Senior - Berlin, MD), who captured a 25th place ranking in the 1998 Men's Division I Region I rankings. The Women's team gets to square off against two of the five teams ranked ahead of them in the region, as they play William & Mary April 9 and Virginia April 15. The Terps will also get to play athletes ranked ahead of them, as three of the top five players individually are Terp opponents in the spring.
