Jan. 31, 1998 North Carolina Defeats Maryland in the First Meet Ever at the Campus Recreation Center NatatoriumCOLLEGE PARK, Md., - Despite record-breaking performances by freshman Kevin Burke (Cabin John, Md.) and junior Kim Piotro (Mesa, Ariz.), the University of Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams were defeated by North Carolina today in the inaugural meet at the new Campus Recreation Center Natatorium. The visiting Tar Heels defeated the Maryland women's team (7-1, 1-1 in the ACC) 175-124 and the men's team (7-1, 1-1 in the ACC) 167-130. Burke swept both the men's one and three-meter diving competitions (each of which consisted of 11 dives). His score of 578.25 in the three-meter competition shatters the school record of 540.30, which was set by former Terp Jamika Biyanilla in 1992. In the one-meter competition, Burke's score of 515.00 missed the school record by only two points. With his effort against the Tarheels, Burke now has the top one and three-meter diving scores in the ACC this season. Piotro won three individual events in the same meet for the first time in her collegiate career. In the 100-yard freestyle, she broke her own school record with a time of 51.15 seconds (51.21 was the old mark). She also recorded victories in the 50-yard freestyle (23.66) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.44). Other noteworthy performances for Maryland were turned in by freshman Courtenay Miller (Bellvue, Wash.), who swept the women's one and three-meter diving competitions (with scores of 398.10 and 458.55 respectively) and freshman Ryan Walker (Havertown, Pa.), who won the men's 200-yard backstroke (1:51.32) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.83). Maryland's next competition is a tri-meet on Saturday, February 7 against Virginia and Duke. The meet will be held at Virginia starting at 11 am.
