Swim Teams Top Villanova
Nov. 11, 2002 VILLANOVA, Pa. - The University of Maryland women's swimming and diving team improved their record to 9-0 on Friday, Nov. 8, beating Villanova 158-83 in a dual meet at the Villanova Swim Center. The men evened their record to 3-3 by beating the Wildcats 183-47. Sophomore Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.) led the Terps with two victories in freestyle events. She won the 50-yard freestyle (24.13) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.25). Other winners for the women included sophomore Marina Mulyayeva (Almsty, Kazakhstan) in the 100-yard butterfly (57.24), sophomore Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) in the 100-yard backstroke (57.88) and freshman Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.91). Sophomore diver Rebecca Rudolph (Marietta, Ga.) swept both diving events against the Wildcats, winning the 1-meter board with a score of 262.13 and the 3-meter board with a score of 237.83. On the men's side, sophomore Brad Schertle (Baltimore, Md.) had an impressive meet, earning victories in both the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.85) and the 1000-yard freestyle (9:50.52). Seven Terps won individual events for the men in the victory, and junior diver Steven Vigilante (Plano, Texas) won both the 1-meter board (282.23) and the 3-meter board (279.00).
Both teams will have the week off in preparation for the Terrapin Cup Invitational, held at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium Nov. 21-23.
