Women's Swimming And Diving Tops Clemson and Virginia Tech
Oct. 26, 2002 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The women's swimming and diving team earned a pair of victories Saturday, cruising to a 173-70 win over ACC foe Clemson and a 170-73 win over non-conference opponent Virginia Tech. The women are now a perfect 3-0 at home and on the season. The Terrapin men struggled with both opponents, losing to Clemson, 137-104 and Virginia Tech, 135-102. The women had six swimmers win individual events in the double dual meet. Senior Shandra Johnson (Omaha, Neb.) continued to dominate the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events, coming away with victories in both for the second meet in a row with times of 51.19 and 1:50.05. Sophomores Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) and Rebecca Rudolph (Marietta, Ga.) and freshman Inbal Levavi (Ichad, Israel) also were multiple winners for the Terps. Lavell won the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.79) and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:08.24), and Levavi finished first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.97) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.52). Rudolph swept both diving events, winning the 1-meter board with a score of 233.80 and the 3-meter board with a score of 224.80. Other winners for the women were freshman Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.74) and senior Bridget Mallon (Arlington, Va.) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.71). A bright spot for the men's team continues to be junior Mark Hill (Rye Brook, N.Y.). Hill was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle (20.69) and the 100-yard freestyle (45.81) for the second consecutive meet.
Sophomore Dan Fallon (Elkton, Md.) also had multiple wins for the men's squad, capturing first place in the 500-yard freestyle (4:40.54) and the 1000-yard freestyle (9:37.55). Sophomore Erik Weinberg had a victory for the Terrapins in the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.27).
The men are back in action Friday, Nov. 1, in a relay meet with Johns Hopkins and Howard at 4:00 p.m. in the Campus Recreation Center Natorium in College Park. The women will also swim in that relay meet against Johns Hopkins, Howard and Wingate. The women then face Wingate and Richmond on Saturday, Nov. 2. That meet is scheduled to begin at noon at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium in College Park. |
