Feb. 18, 2012
Lafferty landed on the podium once again, securing a B-cut 48.93 in the 100 free. Hamilton took second in the 200 breast (2:11.52), which was also a B-cut performance and a Maryland school record.
The Terps capped the meet on a high note, notching a second place showing in the 400 free relay as the team of Carolyn Fittin, Ginny Glover, Jennifer Roberts and Lafferty touched the wall at 3:16.60 for another B-cut mark and Maryland school record.
Fittin continued her successful first championships with a 10th place showing in the 100 free (49.67), which was also a B-cut performance. Elena Donald (52.11) was 22nd in the event.
Maryland added points in the 200 fly as Addison Koelle (eighth - 1:59.89) and Roberts (12th - 1:59.65) both notched B-cut marks. Meggie Schmidt was 18th (2:02.81)
Jessica Whelan (217.95) garnered another point for the Terps with a 16th place finish in the platform dive.
"This whole season our team has shown the character and type of people they are and they did it all with grace and dignity," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "We had a lot of really great swims and not everything went our way but we had some team records and a lot of podium finishes. We got stronger through Friday and Saturday night. The 400 free relay to finish the championships was the greatest relay I've ever seen."
Maryland was two points shy of fourth place Virginia Tech in the final team standings. Virginia won its fifth straight title.
The 2012 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships will be held on the campus of Auburn University March 15-17.
