Matt Emmert is entering his first season at Maryland after spending the last two seasons as a graduate assistant coach for the men's and women's program at Texas Christian University.
He coached the Horned Frogs' lone Mountain West champion in the women's 100 free in 2011. In 2009-10, Emmert helped guide the men's squad to a 7-0 dual meet record and a Mountain West regular season title. In total, Emmert coached nine all-conference swimmers. The Horned Frogs smashed 22 of 38 team records during Emmert's tenure.
"I am excited about what Matt is going to bring to our pool deck," Schimmel said. "His experience with developing and coaching top elite athletes at both the club level as well as the past two years at TCU will certainly add strength to our program.
"Matt's passion, commitment and excitement to help our student-athletes and bring Maryland to the top of the ACC is going to be critical in our program achieving our goals. I am looking forward to working with Matt as a dynamic and integral part of the Maryland swimming and diving staff."
Prior to landing at TCU, Emmert spent time as an assistant with the Rams Swimming Club and at the helm of the North Kingstown High School girls program.
"I'm grateful and extremely excited to join one of the most experienced coaching staffs in the country," Emmert said. "The culture of excellence established by coach Schimmel and his expectations for the future of the Maryland swimming and diving program are tremendous. I am appreciative for the opportunity to join the Terrapin family.
"With one of the best coaching staffs and best facilities in the country, this is a program on the rise. I'm eager to contribute in any facet possible to help this program achieve an ACC championship, while being competitive at the national level."
Emmert garnered a bachelor's degree in history from Rhode Island in 2004. While attending URI, the four-year letterwinner, served as co-captain as a senior, earned the URI Coaches' Award in 2002 and was named MVP in 2004. He also claimed the Rams' school record in the 200 free.
Emmert earned a master's degree in liberal arts from TCU in May.
