COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 21 Maryland (51-23, 6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Region 2 Tournament and was one victory from playing in the College Softball World Series as the team completed the most successful season in the five-year history of the program. The Terps earned their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid when they finished as the regular season champions of the South Atlantic Alliance (SAA) with a 10-2 record. In addition, the Terps finished in first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time in school history with a 6-2 record and earned the top seed in the ACC Tournament. The Terps established a school record for victories (51) and finished ranked nationally among the top 25 for the first time in school history.

TERPS PLAY IN NCAA TOURNAMENT FOR FIRST TIME
Maryland finished with a 3-2 record in Region 2 of the NCAA Tournament. The third-seeded Terps defeated fourth-seeded Southwest Texas (5-0), second seeded Kansas (1-0) and top-seeded and No. 3 ranked Arizona (7-3) to advance to the championship round of the region. The Terps fell to Arizona (10-0, 8-0) in the championship round. It marked the first time the Terps had played in the NCAA Tournament in the history of the program. Marylands three victories in the NCAA Region 2 Tournament tied the ACC record for victories in a regional tournament in one season, a mark which is also held by Florida State.

THREE TERPS EARN NCAA TOURNAMENT REGION 2 HONORS
Pitcher Kelly Shipman (Huntingtown, Md.), catcher Sarah Putnam (Chesapeake, Va.) and designated player Cortney Madea (Northampton, Pa.) were named to the NCAA Tournament All Region 2 team as the Terps advanced to the regional final in Tucson, Ariz. Shipman started all five games in the tournament for Maryland and had a 3-2 record with 25 strikeouts. She earned a complete game victory as the Terps defeated No. 3 Arizona on May 22. Putnam finished the tournament with a .545 batting average (six-for-11) and had at least one hit in all five games. Madea had three hits during the tournament including her first career postseason home run and four RBI in the Terps victory over Arizona.

SHIPMAN NAMED ALL-AMERICAN
Senior Kelly Shipman was named to the All-America Third Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. It marked the first time in school history that a Maryland player had earned All-America honors. Shipman won a school-record 32 games, recorded a school-record 290 strikeouts, pitched a school-record 14 shutouts, and recorded the third-best ERA (1.24) in school history. Offensively, Shipman hit .270 with a school-record nine home runs, a career-high tying 12 doubles and 29 RBI.

SHIPMAN NAMED ACC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Senior Kelly Shipman, who led the ACC in victories (32), total strikeouts (290), appearances (50), innings pitched (321.1), saves (two) and ranked third in home runs (0.12 hrpg), was named the ACC Player of the Year in a vote by the leagues five head coaches. Shipman was also named to the All-ACC team for the third time in her career. She is the first Maryland player to ever earn ACC Player of the Year Honors.

LAMANDRE NAMED ACC COACH OF THE YEAR
Gina LaMandre, who led Maryland to a school-record 51 victories this season, was named the 1999 ACC Coach of the Year. She completed her fifth season at the helm of the Terrapin program with a 51-23 record. Lamandre has a career record of 153-125-1. She led the Terps to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth and coached them to the regional finals, one win away from qualifying from the College World Series.

FOUR TERPS EARN MID-ATLANTIC HONORS
Pitcher Kelly Shipman, third baseman Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) and shortstop Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) were named to the All-Mid-Atlantic softball first team, while first baseman Kiesha Pickreal (Hughesville, Md.) was a second team selection. The four selections marked the most for the Terps in the five-year history of the program.

SHIPMAN CLOSES BRILLIANT CAREER
Senior Kelly Shipman finished her career as the holder of most of the school pitching and hitting records. She closed her career as the all-time school-leader in pitching victories (86), earned run average (1.02), strikeouts (1,037), innings pitched (942.2), shutouts (14), complete games (128), pitching appearances (153), games started (227, T1st), batting average (.309), runs scored (128), hits (212), doubles (40), triples (four), home runs (19), RBI (95) and walks (109).

PICKERAL WITH RECORD FOR HITS IN A SEASON
First baseman Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) established a school record for hits in a single season with 68. Her 68 hits breaks the previous record of 54 by Kelly Shipman during the 1998 season and Tricia Hunt during the 1996 season. Pickeral recorded a career-high three hits in five games and had nine multiple hit games. She also became the second freshman to lead the team in batting average with a .316 average and led the team in doubles with 15.

TERPS ESTABLISH SCHOOL RECORD FOR HITS
Maryland established a single-season school record for hits with 507. The Terps averaged a school-record 6.8 hits per game and were not held hitless during any one of their 74 games. Led by freshman Kiesha Pickeral, the top five single-season individual hit marks were established during the 1999 season. A school-record 10 players recorded 20 hits or more. Maryland recorded a season-high 19 hits against Tennessee-Martin on Feb. 26.

POTZMAN SCORES SCHOOL-RECORD 49 RUNS
Shortstop Jennifer Potzman scored a school-record 49 runs as Maryland scored a school-record 316 runs as a team this season. Potzman broke the previous record of 42 runs scored by Amy Sandler during the 1996 season. Potzman, who had a career-high 62 hits, was one of three players to record 60 or more hits this season. Potzman led the Terps with a .428 on base percentage.

RADFORD LEADS TERPS IN RBI, SETS RECORD
Third baseman Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) was credited with a school-record 38 RBI as the Terps established a team record with 277 RBI during the 1999 season. Radford became the second freshman in school history to lead the team in RBI, joining Fawna Lackovic (30 RBI) during the 1996 season.

PICKERAL AMONG BATTING AVERAGE LEADERS
Freshman Kiesha Pickeral hit a team-leading .316 this season. Her batting average ranks as the sixth highest single-season average in school history. Pickeral finished the 1999 season as one of only three players with 60 or more hits and one of six players with 200 or more at bats. She recorded a Terp freshman record with 205 at bats.

LACKOVIC A DECORATED TERP
Senior Fawna Lackovic (Centreville, Va.), an All-ACC Tournament selection, closed her career as one of the outstanding players in school history. She played every position except pitcher during her career and is among the career leaders in a number of categories. She is the all-time school leader with 21 stolen bases and ranks among the all-time leaders in games played (229, first), games started (227, first), hits (181, first), doubles (36, second), runs (93, second), RBI (88, second) and walks (59, second).

SANDLER A CAREER TERP LEADER
Second baseman Amy Sandler (Miami, Fla.) will long be remembered as one of the founding members of the softball program. Sandler was an ACC All-Tournament team selection in 1996 and played on Marylands 1997 ACC Championship team. She started a school record 201 consecutive games before an injury during her senior season. She closed her career ranked third all-time at Maryland with 30 doubles, third in games played (213), second in runs (120) and third in career hits (171).

Senior Kelly Shipman hit a single-season school-record nine home runs during the 1999 season. Shipmans is also the Terps career home run leader with 19.

HOME RUNS HAPPENING
Maryland hit a school-record 39 home runs in 1999. Senior Kelly Shipman hit a single-season school-record nine and was followed closely by freshman Beth Radford who hit seven. The previous school record was 23 during the 1998 season. Marylands home run total led the ACC and marked the first time that the Terps led the ACC in home runs.

TERPS IN THE POLL
Maryland was ranked 21st in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll dated May 12. It marked the highest ranking in school history and the fourth consecutive week the Terps have were ranked in the top 25. The final poll of the season is released on June 2, following the World Series.

SHIPMAN OWNED ACC PITCHER AWARD
Senior Kelly Shipman was selected as the ACC Pitcher of the Week a record five times this season. Shipman is joined by only Florida States Stacy Vanable, who won the award twice, as multiple award winners this season.

THE LAMANDRE LEDGER
Head coach Gina LaMandre directed the Terps to a 51-23 record and into an NCAA regional championship game in 1999. The 51 victories are a personal head coaching career-high. LaMandre won her 150th career game as the Terps defeated Georgia Tech, 7-0, in the ACC tournament on May 15.

KEEPING THE OPPONENTS OFF THE BOARD
Marylands pitching trio of senior Kelly Shipman and freshmen Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Danielle Carpenter (Mount Laurel, N.J.) recorded a school-record 20 shutouts this season. Shipman earned a shutout victory against Kansas in the NCAA Tournament while Shipman and Bettker combined to blank Southwest Texas, also in the NCAA Tournament. The previous school record was 15 during the 1997 season. Shipman led the staff with a school 15 shutouts while Bettker has six.

SHIPMAN PICKS UP WINNING PERCENTAGE
Senior Kelly Shipman entered her 14th start of the season against Iowa State on March 12 with a disappointing record of 6-7. She shut out the Lady Cyclones, winning 3-0, and has a 26-5 record since that victory. Shipman won a school-record 32 games this season.

THE LONGEST GAME IN SCHOOL HISTORY
Marylands 13-inning victory over South Florida on May 2 was the longest game in school history. Senior Kelly Shipman struck out eight and allowed only four hits as Maryland gained the victory. The game was scoreless through 10 innings before both teams scored one run in the 11th and the Terps scored two in the 13th to claim the win. Freshman Kiesha Pickeral was credited with the game-winning RBI on a sacrifice fly in the top of the 13th.

VICTORIES OVER RANKED TEAMS
Maryland defeated a school-record five teams which were nationally ranked in the USA Today/NFCA top 25 at the time of the game. The Terps victory over No. 3 Arizona in the NCAA Tournament was the first-ever for the program over a team ranked in the top 5 team while the Terps victory over then No. 6 South Florida on Feb. 7 at the Louisville Slugger Tournament was the first-ever for the program against a top 10 team.
