Four Terps Named to Mid-Atlantic Softball Team
May 19, 1999 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Pitcher Kelly Shipman, third baseman Beth Radford and shortstop Jen Potzman Tuesday were named to the All Mid-Atlantic softball first team, while first baseman Kiesha Pickeral was a second team selection. The four selections marked the most for the Terps in the five-year history of the softball program. Maryland, ranked 21st nationally, is participating in the NCAA Tournament for the first time this week. The Terps are slated to meet Southwest Texas State in the opening game of a six-team regional in Tucson, Ariz., on Thursday. The Terps have won a school-record 48 games. Shipman, a senior from Huntingtown, Md., has been a force on the mound and at the plate this season, winning a school-record 28 games in addition to belting a school-record nine home runs. Shipman has thrown four no-hitters this season and owns an ERA of 0.98. Radford, a freshman from Dunkirk, Md., is hitting .302 with six homers. She shares the team lead with 36 RBIs. Potzman, a sophomore from Trexlertown, Pa., is hitting .299 with three homers and 36 RBIs. She also leads the team with a .420 on-base percentage and has set a single-season school mark with 47 runs scored. Pickeral, a freshman from Hughesville, Md., is batting a team-high .330 with three homers and 31 runs batted in. She also has belted a school-record 15 doubles.
