Softball Closes Season with Second Highest Victory Total
May 4, 1998 THIS WEEK: Season Completed TERPS CLOSE SEASON ON HIGH NOTE Maryland closed out the 1998 season with victories in three of its last four games including a doubleheader sweep of George Mason on April 28.
LAMANDRE GAINS VICTORY NO. 100 Head coach Gina LaMandre gained her 100th career victory as the Terps defeated George Mason on April 28. LaMandre now has 102 victories in her four seasons at Maryland and has a career record of 102-102-1 for a winning percentage of 50 percent. In the last two seasons, the Terps have won nearly 55 percent of their games as LaMandre has directed the Terps to a 54-45 record.
TERPS 28 VICTORIES IS SECOND MOST IN SCHOOL HISTORY Maryland's 28 victories this season marks the second highest victory total in school history. The school record for wins in a season is 33 by the 1996 team which finished with a record of 33-24-1.
SHIPMAN SETS BATTING AVERAGE, SLUGGING PERCENTAGE MARKS Junior Kelly Shipman (Huntingtown, Md./Northern) established school records for batting average (.355) and slugging percentage (.592) while tying the school record for hits in a season (54).
SHIPMAN SETS HOME RUN MARK Junior Kelly Shipman hit a school record eight home runs this season. Her eight home runs broke the previous school mark of two which was held by four different players. Shipman hit a single-game career-high of two home runs against Drexel University on Feb. 20 in the 1998 season opener.
MADEA ESTABLISHES SCHOOL RECORD FOR RBI Sophomore Cortney Madea (Northampton, Pa./Northmpton) established a school record with 33 RBI this season. She broke the previous record of 30 by current Terp Fawna Lackovic during the 1996 season. In addition, she enjoyed her finest season as she played in all 50 of Maryland's games and hit a career-high .297 at the plate.
POTZMAN ALSO SETS SCHOOL RECORD FOR DOUBLES Freshman Jennifer Potzman (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) banged out a school record 13 doubles this season. She broke the school record of 12 doubles held by both Fawna Lackovic and Kelly Shipman during the 1996 season. She had a season-high two doubles in two different games - at Georgia on March 23 and against Youngstown State on March 27.
TERPS SET TEAM RECORD FOR HITS IN A SEASON Led by five players with 40 hits or more the Terps established a team record for hits in a season with 367. The 367 hits in 50 games is equal to a school record 7.3 hits per game.
KILLIAN A STANDOUT ON THE MOUND AND AT THE PLATE Junior Tisha Killian (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) led the Terps pitching staff with 15 victories and finished fourth among the Terps hitters with a career-high .310 batting average. Killian's 15 victories nearly matched her freshman and sophomore year combined total of 16. Her 24 games started matched her career-high which she also established during the 1996 season and she struck out a career-high 99 batters. Killian allowed opposing batters to hit only .191 against her and she allowed only two home runs during the season.
LACKOVIC SETS BEVY OF PERSONAL BESTS Junior Fawna Lackovic (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) hit a career-high .306 at the plate, established her career high with one triple and tied her career-high with two home runs. She also earned a career-high 16 walks.
LACKOVIC ESTABLISHES SCHOOL RECORD 16-GAME HITTING STREAK Junior Fawna Lackovic recorded a school record 16-game hitting streak from March 23 through April 17. Lackovic batted .320 (17-for-53) during the rampage. Lackovic's season batting average was as high as .385 during the streak.
POTZMAN ESTABLISHES SCHOOL RECORD FOR RBI Freshman Jennifer Potzman drove in 32 runs this season. Potzman's 32 RBI was only one behind Cortney Madea who led the team and established a new school record. Potzman recorded a season-high five RBI against Md.-Eastern Shore on March 15. She drove home four runs against North Carolina - Wilmington on Feb. 21 and four against UMBC on Feb. 27.
MEEHAN NAMED TO ACC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Freshman Holly Meehan (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain), who had four hits in eight at-bats (.500 batting average) in the ACC Tournament, was named to the ACC Al-Tournament team. Against No. 16 Florida State, Meehan had one of Maryland's four hits; against Georgia Tech she tied her personal single game best with two hits and she had one hit in three at-bats against North Carolina.
TERPS TALENTED FRESHMAN CLASS Four members of Maryland's talented freshman class were full-time regulars during the 1998 season. Shortstop Jennifer Potzman (45 hits, .313 batting average), first baseman Holly Meehan (28 hits, .215 ba), rightfielder Angie Zittle (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake, Md.) (22 hits, 214 ba) and third baseman Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) (22 hits, 16 RBI) all played in at least 40 games and had at least 20 hits. 1998 MARYLAND SOFTBALL Overall Record: 28-22-0 ACC Record: 3-3 SASA Record: 6-6 TERPS BY THE NUMBERS
