Maryland's Monica Cyphert, Amanda Bettker Take ACC Weekly Softball Accolades
April 17, 2001 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland softball student-athletes Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) and Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) earned this week's ACC Softball Accolades, taking Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively. The Terrapin squad went 3-1 last week to improve their season record to 34-14 (1-1 ACC). Maryland has won 19 out of its last 22 games. Cyphert, a Terrapin right-handed hurler and designated player, takes the ACC Player of the Week award after keying Maryland to two wins over George Mason and a victory over ACC and SASA foe Georgia Tech. Cyphert tallied five hits, including two doubles and a home run, in 12 at-bats for a .417 batting average. The rookie scored four runs and added three RBI, while her two-run bomb against Georgia Tech led the Terrapins to the 2-0 win. She also fired seven relief innings of scoreless softball, allowing two total hits and striking out four in games against the Patriots and Yellow Jackets. The freshman shares this week's conference accolade with Florida State's Jen White-Stokes. Bettker, the junior fireballer of the Terps' second-rated ACC pitching staff, was commanding on the mound in shutout victories over George Mason and Georgia Tech. In 14 innings, Bettker struck out 14 batters and allowed no runs. The Terp ace gave up just seven hits and walked two as she extended her shutout streak to four and improved to a 12-3 record on the season and 0.95 ERA. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the second of 2001 for Bettker, as she was also cited on March 12 after a 2-0 slate at the Speedline Invitational. The Terrapins play in a pair of road doubleheaders this week. Maryland travels to Penn State for a 3 p.m. doubleheader meeting on Wednesday, April 18, before facing Virginia in Charlottesville on Sunday at 1 p.m.
