Maryland Splits Doubleheader with Florida State

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Sophomore Cortney Madea hit her first career grand slam homerun to lead the Terps to a 5-3 come-from-behind victory in game one and Florida State junior pitcher Stacy Venable struck out three and allowed only one earned run as Florida State won the second game 9-1 at the North Fields Softball Complex here this afternoon.
Maryland's record is now 24-19 overall and 4-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while Florida State improved to 47-18 and 5-3 in the ACC. The Seminoles are ranked 14th in the nation in the most recent NFCA/USA Today poll.
Madea's grand slam came off Seminole pitcher Corrie Williams and allowed the Terps to recover from a 3-0 deficit. It was Madea's third home run of the season. For the day, she was three-for-six with four RBI and one run scored. Also in that inning, junior Jennifer Potzman was credited with an RBI after she drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Junior pitcher Kelly Shipman won her 12th game of the season as she struck out six and allowed six hits.
The Seminoles used a six-run sixth inning in the second game to take a 9-1 victory. The inning was highlighted by run-scoring singles by Corrie Williams, senior Misty Molin and senior Kristy Hull. For the day, Molin had five RBI. Junior pitcher Stacy Venable allowed just one earned run in six innings work. Her record is now 15-7.
Both teams will compete at the ACC Championship Tournament in Tallahassee April 23-25. The Seminoles will enter as the second seed while Maryland is the third seed.
