Softball Drops Two Games to No. 6 South Florida

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman thirdbaseman Ginny Georgantas hit her fourth home run of the season to lead to lead the Bulls to a 7-2 victory in game one and junior pitcher Jennifer Thompson gained her team leading 22nd victory to lead the Bulls to a 2-0 victory in game two as sixth ranked South Florida swept a college softball doubleheader from Maryland at the North Fields softball complex here this afternoon.

Maryland's record is now 23-18 while No. 6 South Florida improves to 51-10.

Georgantas provided the Bulls with the winning margin with only one out in the top of the first. She smashed a home run to center field to score pinch runner Nikki Phillips and catcher Krista Francisco. The Bulls had scored the first run of the game after rightfielder Shannon Walker was hit by a Kelly Shipman pitch and scored on a double by pitcher Monica Triner.

Triner struck out four and did not walk a batter in game one

In the second game, winning pitcher Jennifer Thompson retired the final 20 batters of the game and allowed only one hit as the Bulls won the second game, 2-0. Thompson allowed Maryland's first batter of the game, Kelly Shipman, to get a hit. Shipman singled to left field. Maryland's third batter, shortstop Jennifer Potzman, was intentionally walked. Thompson retired the next 20 batters to gain the victory and her ninth shutout of the season. Her record is now 22-3.

The Bulls scored an unearned in the first inning and added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Rightfielder Shannon Walker reached on an error and scored on an RBI single by thirdbaseman Ginny Georgantas in the first for the game winning run. Leftfielder Betsy Holler walked and scored on an RBI single by shortstop Lea Mishlan for the winning margin.

Shipman, a junior had two hits and one RBI on the day while freshman thirdbaseman Shelly Burrell had an RBI single in game one.

Maryland will play host to 14th ranked Florida State Sunday in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
