Terps Split Softball Doubleheader with Virginia

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Virginia's Lori Reese scored on an error by the Maryland second baseman in the top of the eighth inning of the second game to lead the Cavaliers to an 5-4 victory and help them avoid being swept by the Terps in a college softball doubleheader at the North Softball Complex here this afternoon. In the first game, Maryland's Fawna Lackovic drove home the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Terps to an 8-7 victory.
Maryland moves its record to 23-16 overall and 3-3 in the ACC. Virginia is now 31-20 and 1-5 in the ACC..
Reese scored the game winning run in the second game as she was placed on second base to begin the eighth inning. In extra innings of a college softball game, the player who made the last out of the previous inning is placed at second to begin the extra inning. Reese was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by designated hitter Jen Krill. She then scored on an error by Terp second baseman Amy Sandler.
Maryland won the first game in dramatic fashion on RBI singles by Sandler, designated hitter Cortney Madea and Lackovic. Lackovic singled to right center to plate winning pitcher Kelly Shipman with the winning run. Lackovic had one hit in each game to extend her school record hitting streak to 14 games.
