Terps Fall to North Carolina in Softball Doubleheader

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina swept a double-header from Maryland, winning the first game, 2-0, and taking the second game, 5-2, at Finley Field here this afternoon.

Maryland fell to 20-15 overall and 4-2 in the South Atlantic Softball Association while North Carolina improved to 18-15 and 4-2 in the SASA.

The Tar Heels gained the victory in the first game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Designated hitter Brandy Arthur drove in one run with a double and shortstop Michelle Semmes added a run scoring single for the only runs of the game.

Junior Kelly Shipman absorbed the loss despite striking out four and allowing only one earned run. She did not walk a batter and allowed only three hits. Freshman Jennifer Potzman led Maryland with two hits including a double in the first inning.

In the second game, North Carolina benefited from single runs in the first, third and sixth innings and two runs in the fifth. Semmes, Arthur and Beth Olen recorded RBI hits while Colleen Lefferts and Crystal Henderson scored on passed balls by the Maryland catcher.

For Maryland, freshman Brooke Maslo recorded two hits and scored one run and Shipman doubled and scored a run in the top of the first.

Maryland will play host to UMBC Thursday in a double-header beginning at 2:30 p.m.
