Terps Softball Sweeps UNC-Charlotte

April 4, 1998

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Junior Kelly Shipman threw a nine inning shutout to lead Maryland to a 1-0 victory in the first game and had the game winning RBI in the second game as the Terps took the nightcap, 3-1, to gain a sweep of UNC-Charlotte in college softball here this afternoon.

Maryland improved to 20-13 and 4-0 in the Southern Atlantic Softball Alliance with the pair of victories while UNCC fell to 17-25 overall and 0-8 in SASA.

Shipman earned the complete game victory in game one as she struck out 11, walked only two and allowed only three hits. Shipman carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and did not allow a 49'er runner to advance past second base.

Maryland manufactured the game winning run in the top of the ninth. Left fielder Amy Sandler led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by shortstop Jenifer Potzman. Sandler then reached third on an error by the UNCC thirdbaseman and scored on a sacrifice fly by firstbaseman Holly Meehan. It was Meehan's fourth sacrifice fly of the season.

Shipman was two-for-four with one RBI in the second game to support junior pitcher Tisha Killian's 12th victory of the season. Killian pitched seven innings while allowing only three hits and striking out six.

Shipman single home the game winning run in the top of the second. She singled home Killian who had led the inning with a double. Rightfielder Angie Zittle smacked a two-run triple in the top of the sixth inning to give the Terps their eventual winning margin.
