Terps Take Two From George Mason

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team took both games in a midweek doubleheader vs. local opponent George Mason Wednesday. The Terps (20-14) won the first game 3-1, then the second game 6-3 in College Park.
In game one, the Patriots (10-26) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third off an RBI double to score a run. Maryland answered right back with a sacrifice fly by Candice Beards to tie it up in the bottom of the inning.
The Terrapins added their second and third runs in the game with pinch hitter Kelly Trimble's first career home run over the right field wall.
Senior Kendra Knight pitched the first game and allowed just five hits, one run and notched nine strikeouts in the win.
In the second game, Maryland scored one in the bottom of the first when Beards drove in a run off a sacrifice ground out.
In the top of the fourth, the Patriots took a 3-1 lead. Brooke Blankenship led off with a double, then scored off Tori Rodriguez's single. Megan Blank drove in two more runs next.
Maryland answered in their next at-bats. Shannon Bustillos got the inning started with a leadoff base hit. Vangie Galindo scored Bria Taylor, who pinch ran for Bustillos, with a double down the left field line. After a Patriot pitching change, Bree Hanafin tied it up with an RBI single to right. With two outs and the bases loaded, Maier singled and advanced to third on throw to score all three runs and give Maryland a 6-3 lead.
Freshman Kaitlyn Schmeiser pitched a complete game and allowed seven hits with three strikeouts.
Next, the Terps will hit the road to take on Georgia Tech (23-16, 6-3) in a three-game series in Atlanta over the weekend. The Terps and the Yellow Jackets will play a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
