Softball Drops Two at Long Island
March 18, 1998 BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Donna Barone capped a four-run sixth inning rally with a two-run homer as Long Island came from behind to defeat Maryland 4-3 in game two of a twin bill in women's softball action. The Terrapins built a 4-3 lead with the help of a two-run home run by Kelly Shipman. Shipman also went unscathed on the mound through five innings before the Blackbirds got to her in the sixth. In game one, Kristen Mills tossed a complete game, six-hitter as the Blackbirds toppled the Terrapins, 4-2. Trailing 2-0 after half an inning, the Blackbirds scored two runs in the bottom of the first when Donna Barone was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Stephanie White provided an insurance run in the fourth inning with an RBI double. The Terrapin offense was led by Michelle Burrell who went 2-for-2 at the plate and by Amy Sandler who had two hits and an RBI. Maryland is now 12-7 overall and play Bucknell on Thursday, March 19 before playing in the Winthrop Tournament this weekend.
