Softball Wins East Carolina Pirate Classic

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland improved its record to 8-3 overall on Sunday and captured the championship of the East Carolina Pirate Classic, defeating UMBC, 5-2, and handing Delaware a 6-1 loss in the championship game.

Down 2-0 in the sixth inning, the Terps scored all five of their runs to outlast the Retrievers. Freshman Shelly Burrell opened the scoring onslaught when she tripled. Freshman Jennifer Potzman also had a good day behind the plate, going 1-for-2. Junior pitcher/infielder Kelly Shipman went the distance on the mound, giving up two hits.

In the championship game, junior pitcher Tisha Killian allowed only four Blue Hen hits and the Terps collected nine hits, including a 2-for-4 performance by junior catcher Fawna Lackovic which included a double and one RBI. Killian also played well at the plate, going 2-for-4.

Maryland's Kelly Shipman, Tisha Killian and Jennifer Potzman were all named to the all-tournament team.

The Terps host the first annual Terrapin Classic next Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8.
