Terps Run Rule Rams, Edged by Bulldogs

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team beat Fordham 10-2 in six innings and was edged by Mississippi State 4-3 in ESPN's Citrus Classic in Kissimmee, Fla. at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
The Terps' defense gave up the Rams' two runs in the top of the second inning, then they got one back in the bottom of the inning off of Maier's first home run.
The Terrapin offense continued to drive in runs with four more for an 8-2 lead going into the top of the sixth. They added two more in the bottom of the sixth for the run rule win. Full stats on the Terps-Rams matchup will be available later this weekend.
Freshman Maddie Martin started in the circle vs. Mississippi State. In her two innings, she allowed two hits with one unearned run. The Bulldogs took a one-run lead in the top of the second off of a sacrifice fly.
Freshman Brenna Nation came on to pitch in the top of the third inning. In her 4.0 innings, she gave up three hits, three unearned runs and notched six strikeouts.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 2-0 when they scored off a double to center by Sam Lenehan with a runner on due to an error. Lenehan drove in two more runs for a four-run lead in the fifth with a base hit to left center.
The Terrapins rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Shannon Bustillos led off with a home run to left. Two batters later, senior Melissa Mancuso got on base with a single to right, then Maier sent a two-run shot over the left field fence for the 4-3 score.
Next, the Terrapins will take on Hofstra at 12:15 p.m. Saturday and Fairfield at 4:43 p.m.
