PALM SPRINGS, Ca. -
The Maryland softball team lost 13-1 to No. 7 Missouri Thursday and 8-0 to Oregon State to open the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Despite a solid first inning when the Terrapins (3-2) left two stranded on base, the Tigers (6-0) stole the momentum to score nine runs in the bottom of the second.
Maddie Martin started the game and went an inning and two-thirds to pick up the loss.
Kelsea Roth's home run, along with Chelsea Thomas' and Nicole Hudson's pitching led the Tigers to the win. The two pitchers combined to only allow one run in five innings.
Against the Beavers, the Terrapins' (3-3) Kaitlyn Schmeiser started in the circle. Oregon State got on the board in the top of the first with a solo home run by Elizabeth Santana. The Beavers added two runs in the top of the second with a triple by Ya Garcia with runners on.
Schmeiser held the Beavers scoreless through the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Oregon State's Natalie Hampton led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run to left center. Freshman Brenna Nation came on to pitch the rest of the inning and allowed two hits with a walk and a strikeout. Garcia drove in another run with a single up the middle.
Senior Lexi Carroll came on in the top of the seventh. The Beavers finalized the score at 8-0 with three runs off three hits.
