Entering her eighth season with the Maryland softball program, former outfielder Michelle Burrell returned to the Terrapin softball coaching ranks as Gina LaMandre's assistant in 2003. In her first full season as an assistant coach, Burrell helped lead the Terrapins to a 27-18 record and the third-best winning percentage in program history. In her second season, she helped guide Maryland to its 300th program win and fourth-place ACC Tournament finish. LaMandre is happy to have an assistant who knows the program as well as Burrell does. "She knows the people and she's just fantastic. She brings a lot of continuity to this program," LaMandre said. Burrell received many honors during the 2001 season as she completed her collegiate playing career. As the Terrapins' top hitter her senior year, she captured spots on the All-ACC team, Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team, Verizon Academic All-District II second team and Terrapin Invitational All-Tournament team. She also led the team in several offensive categories such as runs scored, hits, doubles and stolen bases. The center fielder has made her mark in the Terrapin record books, appearing among the career leaders in every offensive category. She ranks first in doubles (40), second in games played (239) and started (239), fourth in hits (183) and triples (3), fourth in runs scored (113), eighth in batting average (.236) and eighth in RBI (77). She was also one of five Terrapins named to the ACC 50th Anniversary Team in 2002. Burrell received a degree in kinesiology from Maryland in 2001.
