The teams played once each in the last three seasons with Maryland winning 3-1 in 1996 at the George Mason Tournament, 3-1 in 1997 at Ludwig Field and with Penn State defeating the Terps in the 1998 season opener for both teams, 3-0. The Terps also faced the other two ACC teams in the field, No. 2 seed North Carolina and Virginia, which received a first round bye. Outside of the conference, Maryland played six teams which made the tournament including USC, UCLA, Baylor, Pennsylvania, James Madison and William & Mary. Only North Carolina played more games against NCAA qualifying teams this season with 16.

With No. 2 seed North Carolina, No. 7 Clemson, Wake Forest, Virginia, Maryland and Duke, the ACC has six teams, two more than any other conference in the nation. All six ACC teams will play in the round of 732 with Maryland Duke advancing out of the first round. The Big XII, Pac-10 and Ivy league each had four teams.
