COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The two top teams in the ACC standings meet on Sunday in Winston Salem, N.C., as the No. 17 Maryland Terrapin women's soccer team battles No. 22 Wake Forest at 1 p.m. at W. Dennie Spry Soccer Stadium.

Scouting The Terps
• Maryland jumped to the top of the ACC standings with a hard-fought 2-2 tie at No. 4 Duke Thursday night in Durham, N.C. The Terps are now 2-0-1 in conference play for seven points.

• The Terrapins opened the 2012 season with a 3-0 shutout at Navy (recap | stats) that featured a one-hour 46-minute lightning delay. Becky Kaplan scored the first two goals of the season for Maryland, while Alex Reed tallied the insurance goal. Four freshmen - Aubre Baker,Riley Barger, Shannon Collins and Sarah Molina - recorded assists in their first collegiate games.

• Maryland had a short turnaround for a match at Villanova that ended in a 0-0 tie (recap | stats). Shannon Zickler filled in for Rachelle Beanlands in net for the Terps and made four saves to record her first career shutout.

• The Terps outshot the Buckeyes, 19-10, but Ohio State took advantage of a Maryland defensive lapse to pull out a 1-0 upset (recap | stats) in Columbus, Ohio.

• Maryland fell behind George Mason 1-0, but scored the game's final three goals to earn a 3-1 win over the Patriots on Aug. 31 (recap | stats). Freshman Gabby Galanti scored two minutes into her Terrapin debut to tie the match. Senior Becky Kaplan scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute and freshman Ashley Spivey added the insurance goal in the 65th minute. Senior Domenica Hodak had two assists in the match, while Spivey, junior Hayley Brock and freshman Alexis Prior-Brown each had one helper.

• Senior Olivia Wagner scored two goals, while freshman Ashley Spivey and junior Hayley Brock each chipped in a goal and an assist as Maryland thumped Towson, 5-0 (recap | stats), in the Terps' 2012 home opener. Senior Becky Kaplan scored the first goal of the game for Maryland, giving her her third game-winning goal of the season. Redshirt freshman Amanda Gerlitz and freshman Gabby Galanti each earned their first career assists in the victory.

• Senior Becky Kaplan put the Terps ahead with her first goal of the game in the third minute, then scored the game-winner in the 89th minute to lead Maryland to a thrilling 2-1 road victory at Alabama (recap | stats) on Sept. 6. Junior Hayley Brock assisted on both of Kaplan's goals with senior Olivia Wagner also getting an assist on the game-winner.

• A 30-yard strike into the upper left 90 by Kristina Maksuti in the 70th minute gave Fordham a 1-0 upset (recap | stats) of Maryland on Sept. 9 at Ludwig Field. The Terps held a 29-5 shot advantage over the Rams and had 13 corner kicks to Fordham's 0.

• Maryland bounced back in a big way - a historic way - becoming the first team ever to defeat North Carolina three times in three consecutive seasons when the Terps topped the Tar Heels, 2-1 (recap | stats), on Sept. 13. Junior Alex Reed gave the Terrapins a 1-0 lead with her goal in the 41st minute. Junior Hayley Brock netted the game-winner, finishing a solid ball across the box from senior Beck Kaplan in the 55th minute. Carolina made it a one-goal game on a penalty kick by Maria Lubrano in the 78th minute, but Maryland defense held off the Tar Heel charge and redshirt freshman keeper Rachelle Beanlands made two big second-half saves to preserve the history-making win.

• The Terrapins improved to 2-0-0 in the ACC for the first time since 1997 with a 4-1 win over Clemson (recap | stats) on Sept. 16 at Ludwig Field. Senior Becky Kaplan got the Terps on the board early with her team-leading seventh goal in the sixth minute. Senior Danielle Hubka scored her first of the season, which proved to be the eventual game-winner, in the 19th minute. Junior Hayley Brock scored Maryland's final two goals in the 74th and 76th minutes, respectively. Senior Olivia Wagner had two assists on the day, while Kaplan and freshmen Gabby Galanti, Sarah Molina and Ashley Spivey each had one helper.

• Maryland's top goal-scorers senior Becky Kaplan and junior Hayley Brock came through with goals to help the Terps earn a hard-fought 2-2 tie at No. 4 Duke (recap | stats) on Sept. 20. Brock scored in the 10th minute, finishing a long ball from senior Domenica Hodak. After the Blue Devils tied the match in the 54th minute, Kaplan gave Maryland the lead back with a quality, composed finish in the 75th minute off of a feed from freshman Aubrey Baker. The high-powered Blue Devils came through with the game-tying goal in the 87th minute to send the game to overtime.

Scouting The Demon Deacons
• Wake Forest is sitting at 8-2-1 overall this season and is 2-1-0 in ACC play after topping Boston College, 2-0, on Thursday.

• The Demon Deacons opened the season with a 1-1-1 mark, but then went on a six-game winning streak, including their ACC opener at Miami, 1-0. The Deacs then dropped a 1-0 decision at No. 1 Florida State before topping the Eagles in Wake Forest's ACC home opener.

Series History vs. the Demon Deacons
• This will be the 22nd all-time meeting between Maryland and Wake Forest and the Deacons hold a 12-7-2 lead in the series.

• Last season, Yewande Balogun made three big saves in overtime to help the Terrapins earn a 0-0 tie vs. No. 6 Wake Forest (recap | stats) on Oct. 8. Balogun finished the match with seven saves to earn her 17th career shutout. Jasmyne Spencer, Olivia Wagner and Becky Kaplan led the offense with four shots apiece.

• In 2010 these two teams met twice with Wake Forest coming out on top both times. In the regular season, Maryland fell behind Wake Forest and ended up losing a 2-1 decision at the Demon Deacons (recap | final stats) on Oct. 21. Junior Ashley Grove finished a corner kick off assists from junior Sade Ayinde and sophomore Olivia Wager for the Terps' lone goal.

• The two teams met again with much higher stakes - the ACC Championship. Maryland and Wake Forest played to a 1-1 tie (recap | final stats), but the Demon Deacons took home the tropy, winning the shootout 3-1. Junior Ashley Grove gave Maryland a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute, but Wake tied the match in the 19th minute. The two teams went scoreless for the remaining 100 minutes, sending the match to a shootout. The Terps and Deacs each coverted their first PK attemps, but WF keeper Aubrey Bledsoe stopped the next three Maryland attempts to seal the title for Wake Forest.

Youth Movement
• Ten games into the 2012 season the Terrapins have played 14 true or redshirt freshmen. That might not seem too significant until noticing that Maryland's freshmen have played more than 42% of the team's on-field minutes. Freshmen have logged 4,388 of the team's 10,340 minutes (940 minutes played x 11 players).

• But the Terp freshmen aren't just playing - they're contributing. Six freshmen - Ashley Spivey, Shannon Collins, Riley Barger, Sarah Molina, Rachelle Beanlands and Erika Nelson - have started for the Terps this season with Spivey and Collins starting every game. Freshmen have totaled 20 of the team's 74 points this season.

Head Coach Jonathan Morgan
• Jonathan Morgan enters his first season at the helm of the Maryland women's soccer program after spending the previous five seasons on the Terrapin sideline as an assistant coach. He is 6-2-2 (.700) as the Terps' head coach.

Terps Toppling Top 10 Teams
• Maryland has defeated a Top 10 ranked team 19 times in its history. The Terps' most memorable Top 10 victory, 2-1 at No. 2 North Carolina on Oct. 24, tied for he highest ranked opponent ever defeated by Maryland. The Terrapins defeated No. 2 Boston College on Oct. 7 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Those two victories mark the first time in program history that Maryland has defeated two Top 10 teams in a single month. The Terps then added to that with another 2-1 win over No. 8 Florida State on Oct. 28. The latest Top 10 win for the Terps came on Sept. 13, 2012 at Ludwig Field when Maryland defeated No. 6 North Carolina, 2-1, to become the first team in history to defeat the Tar Heels three straight times in three consecutive seasons. Here's a list of all of the Terps' Top 10 wins:

Starting Strong
• Maryland's 2-1 win over No. 6 North Carolina on Sept. 13 gave the Terrapins their first 1-0-0 start in conference play since 2001.

• The last time the Terps opened ACC play with a win was on Sept. 2, 2001 when Maryland defeated No 17 Duke, 2-0, at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. From 2002-11, Maryland was 0-8-2 in conference openers.

• Maryland followed that up with a 4-1 win over Clemson on Sept. 16 that put the Terps at 2-0-0 in the ACC for the first time since 1997.

Non-Conference Success
• Dating back to its 10-0 win over Mount St. Mary's in 2008, Maryland has lost only three times in its last 39 matches vs. non-ACC opponents. The Terps have outscored its non-conference opposition 107-20 in those 38 matches.

• The Terps recorded 20 straight wins over non-ACC foes before tying Georgetown, 1-1, in second round of the NCAA tournament in 2010. Maryland is now 32-3-4 in its last 39 non-conference games. The Terps had been unbeaten in 31-straight non-conference games prior to losing, 1-0, at Oklahoma State in the Sweet 16 of the 2011 NCAA tournament. So far this season Maryland has defeated Navy, 3-0, tied Villanova, 0-0, dropped a 1-0 decision at Ohio State, topped George Mason, 3-1, thumped Towson, 5-0, pulled out a late 2-1 win at Alabama and dropped a 1-0 decision to Fordham. Maryland has one more non-conference game on its 2012 slate - an Oct. 3 home match vs. Francis Marion.

118 And Counting At Ludwig Field
• The Terps won their 100th match at Ludwig Field with a 6-0 victory over Iona on Aug. 20, 2010. Since its opening in 1995, Ludwig Field has proved to be a tremendous home-field advantage for the Terps women's soccer team. All-time Maryland is 118-48-21 (.687) at Ludwig Field.

• Through the seasons, the Terps have had a knack for shutting teams out at Ludwig Field. Maryland has won 75 of its 118 victories (63.6%) at Ludwig Field via shutout. Add in the 12 0-0 ties the Terps have had at Ludwig Field and it totals 87 times that Maryland has shutout its opponent in 187 games (46.5%).
