Women's Soccer Defeats Fairfield in NCAA First Round
Nov. 11, 1998
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Keri Sarver (Masillon, Ohio) scored three goals, including the game-winner with 21 seconds remaining, lifting Maryland (11-10-1) to a 4-3 victory over Fairfield (18-2) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament today at Ludwig Field. The Terps move on to face William & Mary in the second round on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Christopher Newport College.
Sarver's three-goal outburst gives her 21 goals for the season, which ties the school record set by senior teammate Emmy Harbo (Baton Rouge, La.) in 1996. On the game-winner, she took a pass from junior Jackie Mynarski (Somers, N.Y.) and lifted the ball past Fairfield goalie Anne Lyons.
"It was a great play by Jackie," said Sarver, "We had a two-on-one breakaway and it was very unselfish of her to pass the ball to me. She saw that I was wide open but either one of us could have scored."
Maryland appeared to have won the game when senior Robin McCullough (Covington, Ga.) converted a penalty kick with 9:19 remaining in the second half. Fairfield, however, came right back when freshman Pam Cluff scored an unassisted goal to tie the game with 7:46 left to go. That set the stage for Sarver's game winner.
"It was an unbelievable game," said Maryland head coach Alan Kirkup. "I thought in the end we were fortunate to get away with a win but it's nice to still be playing."
"It's disappointing to lose," said Fairfield head coach Maria Piechocki, "I think Maryland has some great forwards and they gave our defense trouble all game long."
Sarver's hat trick overshadowed a two-goal performance by Fairfield's Abigail Allan. She scored the game's first goal 19:04 into the first half and put her team up 2-1 midway through the second half. Both times Allan scored, however, Sarver tied up the game for Maryland.
Harbo was the only other Maryland player who turned in a multiple point effort, as she assisted on Sarver's first two goals. Cluff tallied an assist in addition to her game-tying goal.
FIRST HALF SCORING: Abigail Allan (F) from Julie Stevens, 19:04. Keri Sarver (M) from Emmy Harbo, 27:30.
SECOND HALF SCORING: Abigail Allan (F) from Pam Cluff, 65:24. Keri Sarver (M) from Emmy Harbo, 65:46. Robin McCullough (M) on a penalty kick, 80:41. Pam Cluff (F) unassisted, 82:14. Keri Sarver (M) from Jackie Mynarski, 89:39.
