Women's Soccer Clinches Highest ACC Finish With 1-0 Win At FSU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Maryland women's soccer team claimed its highest finish in ACC history with a 1-0 win at Florida State on Sunday afternoon. The Terps will be the No. 2 seed at the 1999 ACC Tournament being held at Chapel Hill, N.C. beginning on Thursday, Nov. 4. Maryland will face No. 7 seed Duke at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
Maryland (9-8-1 overall) secured the No. 2 see with a 4-2-1 conference record as senior midfielder Jackie Mynarski (Somers, N.Y.) scored on an assist from junior forward Julie Nelson (McLean, Va.) at the 8:57 mark.
The Terps battled off a furious Florida State attack in the second half as the Seminoles outshot Maryland 7-0 in the half, and outshot the Terps 9-3 in the match.
The Seminoles finish the regular season at 9-9-1 and 0-6-1 in the ACC. They will be the No. 8 seed in the ACC Tournament and play No. 1 seed and defending ACC champion North Carolina on Thursday at 6 p.m.
The 4-2-1 ACC record is Maryland's best ever in its 13 years of action at the Division I varsity level. Maryland previous best finish in the league was a 4-3 finish which was accomplished in 1995 and 1997. Those were the same years Maryland also had its previous highest seed, at No. 3.
Mynarski now has 21 career goals to rank sixth all-time at Maryland and has 52 points, also sixth best in women's soccer history.
Duke, which finished 2-5-0 in the ACC, was defeated by Maryland in overtime in the lone matchup between the teams during the regualr season. Sophomore forward Sara Gustafson scored her second of two goals in overtime to lift the Terps past the Blue Devils, 4-3 on Sept. 19.
