Final Stats

RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior Jasmyne Spencer scored the game's lone goal in the 68th minute to give the No. 5/8 University of Maryland women's soccer team a 1-0 victory at NC State Sunday afternoon.

The victory moves the Terps to 11-1-1 on the season and to 3-1-1 in the ACC. Maryland now has 10 points in the ACC and currently sit in third place. The Wolfpack falls to 7-7-0 on the season and 1-4-0 in conference play.

"Once again, our team's character and fight showed today," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky. "It was almost 90 degrees, we were down a few kids due to injury, and it was our third road game in eight days. NC State is a good team, with terrific goalkeeping. We knew it was going to take a good goal to be them."

The goal started with a great ball from senior Colleen Deegan, who played it back against the grain to sophomore Megan Gibbons down the sideline. Gibbons then slipped the ball into the box with a short cross that Spencer ran onto and one-timed into the back of the Wolfpack net.

NC State had a chance to take a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but Jennie Krauser's shot was saved by junior defender Mallory Baker to preserve the 0-0 tie.

Maryland goalkeeper Yewande Balogun was not challenged much in the match, but made two saves to earn her first full shutout of the season. NC State keeper Kim Kern finished with five saves.

Spencer led the Terp offense against the stingy Wolfpack defense with three shots. Fellow juniors Ashley Grove and Domenica Hodak each had two shots.

Maryland, which finished its three-game road trip with a 2-1 record, returns to College Park to host Clemson on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field.

"Now we have to keep plugging away," said Pensky. "Clemson is going to come in here Thursday very hungry, and we need to be prepared for another ACC battle."

• Spencer now has seven game-winning goals for her career, moving her into a tie with Jen Biscoe and Mallory Mahar for sixth on the all-time list.
